Michelle Malonza

Research Associate

Michelle is a Research Associate at ILINA, where she co-leads the Program's policy engagement, mentors Junior Research Fellows, and conducts research. Her research so far has focused on the governance of AI in Global South contexts, including co-authoring a paper mapping the roles that these contries can play in ensuring safe AI development, and most recently, examining the risks of automation-first AI adoption. She is interested in regulatory design and interpretation, and in how exisiting legal principles can be adapted to govern AI. Previously, she was an AI Futures Fellow and a Visiting Researcher at the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER). She holds an undergraduate law degree from Strathmore University and a Master of Laws degree from Columbia Law School.
